What I Expect from You

Below is important information about how to care for your own well-being and get the most value out of working with me.If you have any questions or concerns, please email me before proceeding with your purchase.

While I am committed to providing a safe, professional, and supportive environment for you, there are certain precautions and responsibilities you, as a client, need to take in order to care for your own safety and wellbeing during our work together. Below are the key areas for your consideration. You must provide full and honest information about your current mental health, medical history, and any other relevant aspects that might affect the counselling or postpartum services I offer. This includes sharing any current treatments, medications, or past experiences that may influence your care. Being transparent allows me to provide the best support for you.

Your personal well-being is of the utmost importance, and it is crucial that you take care of your mental and physical health while participating in our sessions. If you are experiencing a crisis or need immediate support, please get in touch with an emergency service or a crisis mental health professional. It is your responsibility to attend sessions or notify me in advance if you are unable to do so. If you miss an appointment or fail to attend, you may be charged for the session as outlined in our cancellation policy. The work we do may bring up challenging emotions or thoughts. It is important to take responsibility for how you process and manage these feelings. If at any point you feel overwhelmed or unsure, please communicate with me so we can address any concerns and work together to develop strategies to manage difficult emotions in a healthy way.

If at any point I identify that you need additional professional care outside the scope of our work, I will provide recommendations and referrals to other professionals, including healthcare providers, therapists, or specialists.
As a mother, your choices regarding your child’s care and your own recovery are deeply personal and may vary from others. Whether it’s related to breastfeeding, sleep routines, self-care practices, or seeking additional support, your decisions are valid and deserve to be respected. I am here to provide information and support to help you navigate those choices.

Important Information

Before purchasing or engaging in my postpartum support and women’s counselling services, I want to ensure you have a clear understanding of what to expect and how to approach the process. By being informed and managing your expectations, we can work together to ensure you receive the best possible care and support.

1. This is a Process, Not a Quick Fix
Postpartum recovery and emotional healing take time and patience. Please understand that our work together is not a one-time solution. Healing and recovery, both emotionally and physically, is a gradual process that may require multiple sessions and ongoing support.
My role is to guide and support you through your postpartum recovery or counselling journey, but it is essential for you to actively participate in this process.

4. No One-Size-Fits-All Solutions
Every individual’s postpartum experience and mental health journey is unique. The support I offer is personalized to suit your needs, but there is no "quick fix" or universally applicable solution. You may experience a mix of successes and challenges along the way, and it’s important to be patient with yourself as you work through them.

5. You are the Expert on Your Own Journey
While I will provide you with guidance, tools, and resources to support your journey, ultimately, you are the one who knows your life best. It is important that you make decisions that feels right for you and your family. My goal is to empower you to make informed decisions, but all choices regarding your wellbeing, your recovery, and your child’s care are yours to make.

7.. Not a Substitute for Medical Care
My services are intended to support your emotional and mental wellbeing during the postpartum period or in addressing women’s mental health concerns. However, my services are not a substitute for medical or psychiatric treatment. If you are experiencing severe mental health concerns, physical health issues, or require urgent medical care, I strongly encourage you to seek additional support from healthcare professionals.

9. Confidentiality and Safety
I am committed to providing a safe and confidential environment for you to explore your feelings and experiences. However, if at any time I feel that there is a risk of harm to you or someone else, I may be required to take appropriate action, including contacting other professionals or emergency services to ensure your safety.

Specific Instructions for Working with Me

In order to ensure the safety and well-being of both you and those around you, and to provide the most effective and ethical care, I ask that you please carefully read the following points. By engaging in my postpartum support or women's counselling services, you agree to adhere to these guidelines. This will help minimize misunderstandings and ensure a smoother experience throughout our work together.

1. Emotional Reactions and Vulnerability
Working through postpartum challenges or engaging in deep emotional work can bring up intense feelings. Please be aware that our sessions may trigger strong emotional response. While this is part of the healing process, I want to emphasize the importance of emotional safety. If at any point you feel overwhelmed, it’s important to notify me immediately. We can adjust our approach to provide the best support for you.

2. Health Changes – Please Keep Me Informed
If anything changes regarding your physical or mental health, it’s crucial that you inform me as soon as possible. This includes any new or changed medical diagnoses, starting or stopping medication, pregnancy, or any other significant health updates. This information will allow me to provide more informed and appropriate care during our sessions. It is your responsibility to inform me of these changes promptly.

3. Ongoing Medical Treatment
My services are designed to complement, not replace, medical care. If you are currently undergoing medical treatment (including psychiatric care, medication, or  other therapy), you should not stop, adjust, or self-medicate without first consulting with your healthcare provider. I do not offer medical or psychiatric treatment, and it is important that you continue following any existing treatment plans that have been prescribed to you.

4. Alcohol or Drug Use
For your safety and well-being, please do not attend any counselling or postpartum support sessions while under the influence of alcohol, recreational drugs, or any other substances. Doing so may affect your ability to fully engage in the session and may lead to misunderstandings or miscommunications. If you arrive intoxicated or under the influence, I reserve the right to reschedule or postpone the session.

5. Adverse Reactions to Emotional Work
As we work together, you may experience emotions or reactions that feel uncomfortable or distressing. While this is often a natural part of the healing process, it’s important to recognize that certain deep emotional work can stir up past trauma, anxiety, or sadness. If you experience any adverse emotional reactions, please let me know immediately. We can work together to ensure that you are receiving the appropriate care and guidance to process these emotions safely.

6. Pregnancy and Postpartum Health
If you are pregnant, postpartum, or experiencing significant hormonal changes, please ensure that you are under the care of a medical professional for physical health concerns. While I am here to support you emotionally and psychologically during this period, your physical health should remain a priority and managed by your healthcare provider. If you have any concerns about your physical health during the postpartum period, please consult your doctor or midwife. My postpartum services are an additional support in your care journey, not a health replacement.

8. Client Expectations and Boundaries
Please note that while I am committed to supporting you through your postpartum recovery or emotional journey, I cannot guarantee specific outcomes. The process of emotional healing is deeply individual, and results may vary. It is essential that you approach the work with patience and an open mind, understanding that healing takes time.

Limitations of Service

To ensure that our work together is effective and that there are no misunderstandings, it is important to clarify the limitations and scope of the services I provide. By engaging in my postpartum support and women’s counselling services, you acknowledge the following limitations:

1. Not a Substitute for Medical or Psychiatric Care
The services I provide, are intended to support your emotional and psychological well-being. However, they are not a substitute for medical care, psychiatric treatment, or therapy. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, significant medical or psychiatric symptoms, or require clinical intervention, I encourage you to seek professional medical care. Although I am a qualified Social Worker and have experience in this field, the Altar of Women is not to be considered a replacement for trauma therapy, psychological diagnoses, or treatment plans provided by licensed healthcare providers.

2. Counselling, Not Therapy
My services are focused on providing counselling, support, and guidance. Counselling is an interactive process that can help with emotional wellness, personal growth, and coping strategies. However, counselling does not include psychotherapy, which involves deeper clinical interventions for mental health disorders. If you believe you need therapy for a diagnosed mental health condition, I can refer you to a licensed therapist or mental health professional.

3. No Prescription or Medical Advice
I am not a medical professional and do not provide any medical diagnoses, prescriptions, or treatments. For physical health concerns, including postpartum complications, it is essential that you consult with your doctor, midwife, or other healthcare providers.

4. Not Legal or Financial Advice
While I can support you with emotional well-being, self-care, and overall wellness, I do not provide legal, financial, or other professional advice. If you require legal assistance or financial planning advice, I strongly recommend consulting with a qualified professional in those areas.

6. Respect for Your Choice
I respect your autonomy in making decisions for your well-being, especially in the postpartum period. My role is to provide support and guidance, not to make decisions for you. The choices you make regarding your care for yourself, or your child are ultimately your responsibility, provided they do not pose a risk of harm. If you ever have concerns about the impact of a choice on your health or well-being, I will encourage you to consult with a healthcare professional.

7. Limitation of Liability
While I will always provide services with the utmost care, expertise, and professionalism, I am not liable for any decisions or actions you take that may result in adverse effects or consequences. The outcomes of the services provided are not guaranteed and depend on many factors beyond my control. It is important that you take full responsibility for your own well-being and decisions.

Professional Advice

While I am committed to providing you with the best possible support through my postpartum and women’s counselling services, it’s important to understand that my services are not a substitute for medical, mental health, or other professional advice. If you have any concerns or if any issues arise during our work together that require additional expertise, i strongly recommend you seek advice from an appropriately qualified professional. This may include, but is not limited to, the following medical advice, specific mental health support, financial or legal advice and monitoring your own wellbeing.

You will get the most out of working with me if you’re a postpartum mother who is seeking compassionate care and support during their transition into motherhood. If you’re a woman who is ready to embrace your journey, take ownership of your emotional well-being, and are open to self-discovery. Women who value personal growth and are committed to doing the work needed to heal, thrive, and reconnect with themselves. If you’re looking for a safe space to explore your challenges and cultivate a deeper sense of balance and fulfillment in your life.

The Altar of Women is not an appropriate service if you require more intensive mental health support, or are not emotionally ready to challenge yourself in this space. If you’re experiencing deep, long periods of depression or severe anxiety, I would highly encourage you to find a therapist that specialises in these areas. In addition, if you’re experiencing thoughts/feelings/behaviours of self-harm, suicide and harm to others, or are experiencing homelessness or domestic violence, it is highly recommended to seek out crisis and specific interventions to meet your needs. The Altar of Women is unable to take on these presentations.
